H.264 does compression across multiple still images.

H.264 compression is more efficient than M-JPEG, but increases lag time, a key issue for drones.


M-JPEG.    View      

Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) is the video version of JPEG. It compresses an 8x8 block of pixels using cosine transofrms.

Display Stream Compression.    View      

This VESA standard operates on a single raster of video, meaning it imposes minimal delay. It is indistinguishable to humans from the original image.

There are a list of patents which may apply to it. The link is to the VESA starndard. You want to skip the boiler plate, and jump to chapter 3 to read the meat of the matter.
